Verified means the gamertag was confirmed against Xbox Live, along with the profile details shown. It does not prove that whoever registered owns the account — that needs a Microsoft sign-in, which is not built yet. PlayStation IDs cannot be checked at all, because Sony operates no public lookup for third-party sites.

Platform

Your PSN ID is what a crewmate types to add you in-game, so we store it exactly as entered and never mark it verified — Sony runs no public lookup. Xbox gamertags are checked server-side. Nothing is shared with third parties.

Why not just use matchmaking?

Random lobbies are fine for ten minutes and useless for a heist. The things that actually decide whether a group sticks together — platform, timezone overlap, whether people talk, whether they want to grind or roleplay or race — are exactly the things matchmaking ignores. Filtering on them up front is the whole point.

It is also worth knowing that GTA 6 launches with no online mode at all. There will be nothing to matchmake into on day one, which is precisely why having a crew lined up in advance is worth something.

What the verified badge means

A verified handle is one this site confirmed exists on the platform it claims, server-side. That is possible for Xbox: gamertags resolve through a public Xbox Live API, so the check is real.

It is not possible for PlayStation. Sony runs no public lookup for third-party sites, so there is no way to confirm a PSN Online ID without the account holder's own credentials — which we do not ask for and would not want. PSN IDs are therefore always shown as self-declared. That is not a gap we are planning to paper over with a badge that means nothing.
