GTA 6 Online: Rockstar's own store listing says launch is single-player only
This one has an actual answer, from Rockstar, in writing — and it is not the answer most people assume. GTA 6 launches as a single-player game. There is no online mode, no co-op and no multiplayer of any kind on 19 November 2026.

The short answer
There is no online mode at launch. Rockstar's own PlayStation Store listing describes Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience, so no multiplayer or co-op of any kind ships on 19 November 2026. Rockstar has not said when, or whether, an online mode follows.
What the store listing says
The FAQ section of GTA 6's PlayStation Store listing addresses the multiplayer question directly, and the answer is one sentence: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." That is a first-party product page, not a rumour, and it was picked up as such by Press Start, Vice and GameLuster.
There is no ambiguity to read into it. No online free roam, no heists with friends, no competitive modes, no two-player co-op campaign. On launch day, GTA 6 is a game you play by yourself.
Note what this is not: it is not a statement that an online mode will never exist. It is a statement about what is in the box on 19 November. Those are very different claims and a lot of coverage blurs them.
This is the GTA V pattern repeating
For anyone who came to the series through GTA Online, single-player-only sounds like something has been taken away. Historically it is the norm — Rockstar has shipped the campaign first and attached the online component afterwards, as a separate thing, every time:
| Game | Campaign released | Online mode arrived | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V | 17 September 2013 | 1 October 2013 (GTA Online) | 2 weeks |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 26 October 2018 | 27 November 2018 (Red Dead Online beta) | ~1 month |
Both arrived within weeks rather than years, and both arrived as distinct products bolted onto a shipped game. GTA Online in particular launched into a fortnight of server collapse that has become part of series folklore — which is a reasonable part of the explanation for why Rockstar would rather not do it on day one again.
What is genuinely unknown
Everything past "not at launch". Specifically:
- When. Rockstar has announced no date, no window, and no confirmation that a GTA 6 online mode is in development at all — however obvious it seems.
- Whether it is included. GTA Online was free with GTA V. Nobody has said whether GTA 6's online mode is bundled, and some coverage has flagged the possibility it is sold separately. That is speculation prompted by the store wording, not a Rockstar statement — but it is the reason the wording caused a reaction.
- What it is called, and whether it replaces or coexists with the current GTA Online.
- Its scope. Whether it is GTA Online's shape again, something structurally different, or a slower rollout of modes.
- Cross-play between PS5 and Xbox. Unconfirmed either way, and with no online mode there is nothing to cross-play yet.
A December 2026 window has circulated, sourced to a leaker with a track record on Call of Duty reporting. Treat it as unverified: an accurate record on one publisher's leaks does not transfer to another's, and this is a claim about a product Rockstar has not acknowledged exists.
What it means if you wanted to play with people
We should be straight about this, because this site exists to help people find others to play with. At launch, there is nothing to play together. Not on PS5, not on Xbox, and — since there is no PC version at all — not on PC. The first weeks of GTA 6 are a solo experience for everybody.
What that changes is timing, not the value of being organised. When GTA V's online mode opened two weeks after launch, the people who had a crew already had a very different first month from the people matchmaking with strangers into a broken server. If an online mode does follow within weeks, the useful preparation is knowing who you are playing with before the doors open.
That is exactly what registering with the GTA 6 crew finder is for, and it is worth saying what it is not: it is not a live matchmaking service for a mode that does not exist. It records your platform, region and playstyle so that when there is something to join, there is a list to build crews from rather than a cold start.
Is the current GTA Online affected?
Rockstar has announced no end date for GTA Online as it exists on GTA V, and no shutdown tied to GTA 6's release. It has previously retired older-generation support — PS3 and Xbox 360 servers closed in 2021 — so the platform mix can change, but nothing about November 2026 has been announced as an ending.
Practically, that means the answer to "where do I play GTA with friends this November" is still GTA Online on GTA V.
Frequently asked questions
Does GTA 6 have multiplayer?
Not at launch. The FAQ on GTA 6's PlayStation Store listing states that "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." There is no online mode, no co-op and no multiplayer included on 19 November 2026.
Will GTA 6 get an online mode?
It is widely expected but has not been announced. Rockstar has confirmed no online mode, no date and no window. Both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 received their online components within weeks of the campaign shipping, which is the basis for the expectation.
Can I play GTA 6 with friends?
Not at launch. GTA 6 ships as a single-player game on 19 November 2026, so there is no way to play with other people on any platform when it releases.
When is GTA 6 Online coming out?
There is no announced release date. A December 2026 window has circulated from a leaker, but it is unverified and Rockstar has not acknowledged that an online mode is in development.
Will GTA 6 Online be free?
Unknown. GTA Online was included with GTA V at no extra cost, but Rockstar has said nothing about how a GTA 6 online mode would be sold.
Does GTA 6 have cross-play between PS5 and Xbox?
Unconfirmed. With no online mode at launch there is nothing to cross-play, and Rockstar has made no statement about cross-platform support in any future online mode.
