GTA 6 roadmap: PC in 2027, Online with it, a PS6 version in 2028?

GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That much is signed. Everything after it — the PC port, the online mode, the inevitable next-generation re-release — is unannounced, and the interesting part is that the constraints are unusually legible this time. Here is the case for PC in 2027, GTA Online arriving with it, and a PlayStation 6 version as somebody's launch title in 2028.

The short answer

Nothing after launch is announced. The case argued here, from Rockstar's own precedent rather than from leaks: a PC port in 2027, GTA Online arriving with it rather than at launch, and a PlayStation 6 version around 2028. Every date below is an argument, and is labelled as one.

What is actually confirmed

Separating this out first, because the rest of the article is a forecast and the two should not be confused. Rockstar has committed to exactly one date and two platforms, in its own Newswire post moving the game from May to November 2026, and on the official Grand Theft Auto VI page.

Five rows, four of them empty. Any roadmap you read — including this one — is built on precedent and industry constraints, not on Rockstar's plans. Treat a confident date from anyone as the prediction it is.

The case for PC in 2027

Rockstar has run the console-first, PC-later pattern four times, and the gaps are inconsistent enough that pattern-matching alone gives you a two-year window rather than a date. What narrows it this time is what is happening to console hardware, which we will come to.

Red Dead Redemption18 May 201029 October 2024~14 years

Seven months to fourteen years. The last row is the one that should stop anyone treating this as a schedule — but it is also the outlier that proves the rule, because Red Dead Redemption was the title Rockstar had no commercial reason to port until it did. GTA 6 is not that game.

The GTA V run is the closer analogue, and it is worth walking through properly, because it contains a detour people forget. GTA V shipped on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013. It did not go to PC next. It went to PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014 — a generational re-release — and only then to PC in April 2015, which Rockstar dated in its own PC announcement. Nineteen months, with a console stop in the middle.

That detour is exactly what cannot happen this time, and it is the strongest argument for a 2027 PC date. In 2014 there was a new console generation sitting there waiting for a port. In 2027, on current evidence, there will not be.

GTA V spent its second year going to PS4 and Xbox One rather than to PC. GTA 6 has no equivalent stop available in its second year.

Why there may be no next-gen console to port to in 2027

PlayStation has not decided

Sony's position is not coy, it is genuinely undecided. CEO Hiroki Totoki has said the company has not yet decided the timing or price of a new console, and CFO Lin Tao has described the PS5 as only mid-way through its life cycle with plans to extend it further.

The reason is memory. AI datacentre demand has pushed DRAM and NAND prices up hard enough that console makers are managing the cost of the hardware they already sell, never mind launching hardware with a fresh bill of materials. A console that has not had its timing decided in late 2026 is not launching in 2027 — the manufacturing lead time alone forbids it.

Xbox's next machine ships to developers, not shops

Microsoft has been more forthcoming and the detail matters. At GDC in March 2026 it named the next Xbox Project Helix and stated, in its own Xbox Wire post, that it plans "to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027". Alpha kits to studios. Not a retail launch — and TechRadar read it the same way.

Microsoft also says Project Helix is "designed to play your Xbox console and PC games", which PC Gamer covered as the headline feature. One correction worth making, because a lot of coverage has run ahead of the source: Microsoft's own post does not say the console boots to a Windows desktop, and it does not name Steam, Epic or GOG. It commits to playing Xbox and PC games, and it separately describes an Xbox mode coming to Windows 11. Anything more specific than that is currently someone's inference.

For scale on the timeline: Xbox Series X development kits reached studios in 2020 and the console shipped in November of that same year. Alpha kits in 2027 is an earlier, rougher stage than that — which is why analyst expectations have drifted towards 2028 rather than 2027.

So the 2027 platform picture is: no PlayStation, an Xbox that is in developers' hands but not in shops, and a PC install base that has been waiting since the first trailer. If Rockstar wants a second sales event in 2027 — and a company that has just spent a decade on one game does want a second sales event — PC is the only door available.

GTA Online: the money argument cuts both ways

The standard argument for delaying GTA 6 Online is that the old one is too profitable to disturb, and the numbers behind it are real rather than rhetorical. In Take-Two's fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 results, recurrent consumer spending accounted for 82% of total net bookings, and GTA Online and GTA V were named among the largest contributors — thirteen years after the game came out.

Forbes' Paul Tassi has taken that to its conclusion, arguing from Rockstar's total silence on multiplayer that we are a year or two out from GTA 6 Online rather than a fortnight. On the evidence available, that is the sober read, and it is also consistent with GTA V, where GTA Online arrived two weeks after launch and then took years to become the thing it is now.

But the argument has a shelf life, and this is where we part company with the pure delay thesis. Protecting GTA Online only works while GTA Online is what people want to play. The moment a meaningful share of that audience has moved to GTA 6 for the single-player campaign, every month of holding the online mode back is a month of collecting money from the worse-looking, worse-performing product while the better one sits there without a reason to return to it. Retention is the asset, not the old map.

GTA 6 is sold as Jason and Lucia's story. An online mode is a different product with a different launch logic — which is part of why it has its own timeline.

Which gives a cleaner theory than either extreme: GTA Online for GTA 6 arrives when Rockstar next needs an event, and 2027 is when it next needs an event. Ship the PC version and the online mode together and each one sells the other — the PC audience gets a launch that is not eighteen months stale, the console audience gets a reason to reinstall, and Rockstar gets one marketing beat instead of two.

And then a PS6 launch-title version

This is the least surprising part of the whole roadmap, because Rockstar has done it every single time. GTA V's platform history is the template, and it is worth seeing laid out, because it explains why nobody at Rockstar treats a launch as the end of a game's commercial life.

A new console launch needs a recognisable game on day one, and a publisher with a finished world and a new GPU to point it at is a natural fit. If PlayStation 6 lands in 2028, a GTA 6 version bundled into that launch is close to a formality — locked-down marketing, a hardware bundle, and a third full-price cycle for a game Rockstar shipped two years earlier.

Extend the pattern past that and it stops being a forecast and starts being a joke about the industry: GTA V got its fourth-generation release in 2022, so on the same cadence there is a PlayStation 7 version of GTA 6 somewhere in the 2030s. That is not a prediction. It is an observation about what happens when one game is profitable enough to outlive three consoles.

The genuinely awkward platform in this picture is the next Xbox. If Project Helix plays PC games, then a PC version of GTA 6 released in 2027 is already a Project Helix version in 2028, and a separate native port becomes a much weaker proposition than the PS6 one. Microsoft's strategy solves a problem for players and creates one for anybody trying to sell the same game twice.

What would falsify this

A forecast that cannot be wrong is not worth reading, so here are the specific things that would break it — and they are all observable, which makes them worth watching rather than arguing about.

  • A PC store page appears before launch. Rockstar has occasionally listed PC alongside console. A Steam or Rockstar Store page for GTA 6 in 2026 would mean a much shorter gap than 2027 and would collapse this whole timeline forwards.
  • Take-Two dates the online mode on an earnings call. Guidance is where platform and mode plans surface first, because the company has to explain its bookings. A specific online date in a quarterly call outranks every prediction, including this one.
  • Sony decides its timing. If Sony names a PS6 window for 2027, the 2014 detour becomes available again and PC slides right — exactly as it did for GTA V.
  • Project Helix gets a retail date. Microsoft has said it will share more; a 2027 consumer launch rather than a 2028 one changes which platform gets GTA 6 second.
  • GTA 6 slips again. It has moved twice already. Every month the launch moves moves everything downstream with it.

GTA Corner's forecast. Not announced by Rockstar; confidence is our own estimate.

The reasoning in one line: 2027 has no new console in it, Rockstar needs a 2027 event, and PC plus the online mode is the only event available. If you want the underlying evidence rather than the conclusion, the console-to-PC gap analysis goes deeper on the port history, and the online mode piece covers what Rockstar's own store listing says about launch day. If the forecast is roughly right, an online mode is a 2027 problem worth preparing for now — which is what the GTA 6 crew finder is collecting players for.

Disagree? That is the point of publishing a forecast rather than a rumour. When do you think PC lands, and when do you think GTA Online turns up — with it, or years after it?

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Rockstar has not announced a PC version, and there is no store page or release date. Every mainline Grand Theft Auto since GTA III has eventually reached PC, so a port is widely expected — but the date is unannounced, and any specific date you see is a prediction.

When will GTA 6 release for PC?

Unknown. Rockstar's past console-to-PC gaps run from about seven months (GTA IV) to about nineteen months (GTA V), which points at some time in 2027 or 2028 from a 19 November 2026 console launch. Our own estimate is the second half of 2027, on the reasoning that no new console generation is expected to be on sale in 2027.

Will GTA 6 have an online mode at launch?

No online mode has been announced for launch, and GTA 6's PlayStation Store listing describes it as a single-player experience. GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA V in 2013, but Rockstar has said nothing comparable this time.

Is GTA 6 coming to PS6?

Sony has not announced a PlayStation 6, and its CEO has said the timing and price of a new console are not yet decided. Rockstar has never mentioned a next-generation GTA 6 version. That said, GTA V was re-released on every subsequent console generation, so a PS6 version is a reasonable expectation once such a console exists.

Will GTA 6 run on the next Xbox?

Microsoft says the next Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, is designed to play Xbox console and PC games, and that alpha hardware ships to developers beginning in 2027. It has not announced a consumer launch date. If it plays PC games as described, a GTA 6 PC version would be playable on it without a separate port.

Why would Rockstar delay GTA 6 Online?

Because the existing one is still extremely profitable. Recurrent consumer spending was 82% of Take-Two's net bookings in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, with GTA Online among the largest contributors. The counter-argument is that this only holds while players still want the older game.
